SEO and blogs

Blogs are the emerging as one of the most popular and influential varieties of news media in an increasingly internet oriented world of information delivery. Social media marketing experts noted with keen interest that even the BBC’s coverage of the recent UK election was informed by bloggers. This election, for the first time, experts and pundits where actually introduced to the nation on radio as ‘Conservative Blogger’ or ‘Labour Party Blogger’. These people clearly have the respect and the ear of the global media.

The reasons behind the rising star of news blogging are many- hugely increased numbers of people choosing to get their news online is one of the strongest drivers and the more social nature of the modern internet is another- but instead of analysing the changing nature of news media, let’s focus on how SEO and blogs go together. The blogs we’re talking about aren’t restricted to SEO news sources- any website can include a blog, and the best and most common content management systems making the rounds today will allow you to add one quickly and easily.

Adding a blog to your website is a really good idea, and here’s why: blogging is the perfect way of keeping a constant stream of fresh content appearing on your site. As we’ve said elsewhere in our own collection of SEO blogs and articles, content is all-important if you want to rank well for any keywords of useful strength. Once all the static pages on your website are filled in with the right keyword-optimised content and all your products have a short, unique description, a blog provides a great way of adding new content. Not only will the search engines take note of the steady, continued action on your site, but the build up of relevant content will also do you plenty of favours in the rankings.

So, what goes in blogs on small commercial websites? Take our SEO blog section as an example on www.searchengineoptimisation.com. We use it as an opportunity to discuss SEO news that our customers might be interested in. It’s a great way to give advice and target minor, long-tail keywords that might not get much attention elsewhere on site. The blogs both add value to our site for customers and show the search engines that we’ve got the content to warrant a good ranking, and they can do the same for yours.

Use it to report news that’s relevant to your industry, or to promote events. If your company is going to have a presence at a trade show or a festival, say so on your blog and invite readers to come and visit. They are also the perfect place to report on new products. Changes in season mean changes in demand for many businesses. Talk about what there is on your site that customers might find helpful this summer, for example. If there is anything you’re excited by, write a quick blog post about it and show that you have the enthusiasm and the expertise customers want.

Too many site features can slow SEO progress

Search engine optimization may be a gradual process. It is about getting things right so that incremental advantages can be obtained over time. Whether or not SEO is introduced from the beginning of a site’s existence, progress up the search engine results pages is rarely as brisk as site owners would like. In a highly competitive context, it is not surprising that it normally takes a little while to get better rankings and more traffic. As the process is always about pleasing users and web crawlers alike, it is possible to focus on pleasing users while you wait for the search engines to appreciate your improvement. Due to the fact that optimization has evolved into a complex discipline it makes sense for the majority of site owners to obtain the services of specialist consultants.

At www.searchengineoptimization.co.uk we work hard to ensure that all our campaigns are conducted to the very highest standards. We fully appreciate that different sites require diverse solutions if they are going to prosper online, which is why we offer different search engine optimization packages.

SharePoint2010 Quota Template Feature

What is a SharePoint Server 2010 Quota Template?
A SharePoint Server 2010 quota template consists of storage limit values that specify the maximum amount of data that can be stored in a site collection. When the storage limit is reached, a quota template can also trigger an e-mail alert to the site collection administrator. You can create a quota template that can be applied to any site collection in the farm. A quota template can also be applied to a site collection that contains sandboxed solutions. You can limit the maximum usage per day and send a warning e-mail message when the usage limit is approaching. If the maximum usage limit is reached, the sandboxed solution is disabled for the rest of the day, and an e-mail message is sent to the site collection administrator. You can also modify existing quota templates. This allows you to modify storage limits for all of the site collections that use the same quota template. When you modify a quota template, you must then reapply it to existing site collections before the new storage limits are enforced. You can delete a quota template if necessary. However, deleting a quota template will not delete quota values from sites that were created by using the quota template. If you want to remove quotas from all sites by using a specific quota template, you must use the object model or perform a SQL query.

Check out how federated search is different in SharePoint Server 2010 …

What is Federated Search in SharePoint Server 2010?
A Federated Search in SharePoint Server enables you to display search results for additional content that is not crawled by your search server. Using Federated Search, the query can be performed over the local content index, or it can be forwarded to an external content repository where it is processed by that repository’s search engine. The repository’s search engine then returns the results to the search server. The search server formats and renders the results from the external repository within the same search results page as the results from the search server’s own content index.
